Overview

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the tube connecting the mouth and stomach (oesophagus). This backwash (acid reflux) can irritate the lining of the oesophagus. Most people are able to manage the discomfort of GORD with lifestyle changes and medications. Although uncommon, some may need surgery to ease symptoms.

This handbook is a practical guide to GORD for practising and trainee gastroenterologists.

Divided into 19 chapters, the book begins with an explanation of surgical anatomy, physiology and histology of the oesophagus, the gastro-oesophageal junction, and the lower oesophageal sphincter.

The following chapters provide detail on the epidemiology and aetiology of GORD, its pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, complications, prognosis, and management.

The final sections examine related oesophageal conditions, recent advances and trends, drugs to treat the disease, and common patient questions.

The text is highly illustrated with photographs and diagrams, and a selection of multiple choice questions and answers further assist learning.
