Overview
Studio 804 is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation that operates as a nine-month academic-year studio. It is a fully synthesized educational experience that focuses on the research and development of inventive building solutions to address the pressing issues that face the built environment. Over the last two decades, the emphasis has been on the future of sustainable design and how new and emerging technologies can be combined with passive strategies to create the type of zero energy, resource neutral buildings that are increasingly necessary. This book provides in depth, detailed studies of the drawn and constructed methods developed by the Studio to help inform the industry as to how Studio 804 has produced sixteen consecutive LEED Platinum buildings to date.
Author Bio
DAVID SAIN I am an architect and builder who has worked with DanRockhill at Rockhill and Associates since 1988. I have watched Dan create Studio 804 and seen it grow. I have helped occasionally over the years when needed. For the two projects described in this book I was just an observer. I talked to Rockhill nearly every day about the work. In putting this book together, I took advantage of this proximity but also recorded interviews with Rockhill and sent him several rough drafts to look over and edit. The goal was to do justice to the astounding work Dan and his students did during these two years – though they are no more special than what they have done every year for nearly three decades. In addition to discussions and interviews with Dan, extensive use was made of documents he had his students complete at the end of both years describing the work they were most involved in during the project. These documents are intended as road maps for the students who follow, but in this case, they were an invaluable source of information about the minutia of the design and construction. I used these documents and the many photos taken by Rockhill and the students as the foundaton to build the book upon. For the last 15 years in addition to working for Rockhill and Associates I have taught two building technology courses at the University of Kansas that focus on teaching architecture students how buildings are built. I also recently started a side business, SAIN WORKS, a small fabrication shop where I do custom projects.
