Overview
Jewish families around the world celebrate Passover as a night of remembrance: of God’s redemption of our ancestors from Egypt, of our struggles throughout Jewish history, and of God’s promise of ultimate redemption for Israel when Messiah comes. The Scriptural story of Passover provides for us a clear theological and religious understanding of God’s active part in Jewish history. This documentation of history helps us understand how God has kept the Jewish people, against all odds, until this very day. The Budoff Haggadah follows the traditional format and customs of the Ashkenazi Jewish community, reflecting our own families’ European Jewish backgrounds. Some sections of text have been edited to shorten the length of the Haggadah. In a few places, we have added unique elements from non-Ashkenazi traditions that seem to be older than our own, and that shed light on the mindset of those who originally set in motion the development of the Seder meal. Nevertheless, it is our hope that all members of the Jewish community, regardless of their family background, will find the Budoff Haggadah to be both meaningful and useful for their own Seder. The Budoff Haggadah is a Messianic Jewish Haggadah and so also reflects our faith in the Messiah of Israel, Yeshua. As a result, some traditional blessings, statements and portions of texts have been slightly amended, and we have added texts from the B’rit hadashah. Messiah Yeshua presented himself at his last Passover meal with his talmidim as Israel’s ultimate Passover Lamb. He built on the redemptive lamb of our Egyptian Exodus, and pointed towards his provision of a greater redemption through the sacrifice of his life to bring full and complete forgiveness of sin for anyone who would accept him. Even with these additions, you will find that we have still maintained the traditional flow of the Haggadah. It is our hope that this Haggadah will both remind us as Jewish people of our national and historic journey from Egypt to freedom, and encourage us as individual Jews in our personal and spiritual journey from sin to freedom through faith in our ultimate Passover Lamb, Messiah Yeshua.
