Overview
When the photographer Daniel Josefsohn (1961–2016) suffers a stroke in November 2012, his life unravels. A year later, ZEITmagazin invites him to document his struggle in a yearlong series. The result is a courageous experiment in self-examination: Josefsohn refuses to accept that his life is stuck in place. With his girlfriend Karin Müller, who puts his observations into words, one of Germany’s leading photographers takes a ride on the relentless merry-go-round of introspection. His photographs are accompanied by diary-like notes that blend episodes from his current diminished existence with recollections of his past life of freewheeling libertinage to unfold a panorama of his passions. The original column ran in ZEITmagazin under the title Am Leben, Alive: a celebration of survival buoyed by humor, devotion, and an unconditional love of life. In November 2014, Lead Academy awarded Daniel Josefsohn and Karin Müller gold in the reportage category. Now titled FUCK YES, the book presents the collected column in German and English. It is rounded out by a preface by Christoph Amend, editor-in-chief of ZEITmagazin, and an interview by the writer and cultural theorist Holm Friebe.
