Overview
Timo Nasseri (b. Berlin 1972 to a German mother and Iranian father; lives and works in Berlin) launched his career in the arts as a photographer. In recent years, however, he has systematically built a sculptural oeuvre. Rising slowly and with infinite precision on the foundations of mathematics, it undoes the separation between abstraction and ornament. Nasseri blends the two formative influences on his art, those of Islamic and Western culture, in arresting ways. The resulting works are alive with tensions and contrasts. The series Epistrophy/Muqarnas, for instance, interrogates sculpture as such. Complex structures made of reflective stainless steel form a space of contemplation that seeks to approximate the infinite. Nasseri's most recent works, including the sculpture GON, for which he was awarded the 2011 Abraaj Capital Art Prize, allow the beholder to experience mathematical theories in space. This first monograph surveys the works Nasseri created between 2006 and 2012.
