Overview
The first monograph created by Marieta Chirulescu (b. Sibiu, Romania 1974) is published in conjunction with her solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, which opened in September 2010. Designed to look like a facsimile, the artist’s book is divided into four sections. The first section consists of twenty pages of blackandwhite photocopies of the sort that frequently figure as preliminary stages for the artist’s abstract pictures on paper and canvas. The second section contains essays by the art historian Mihaela Chiriac and Adam Szymczyk, the director of Kunsthalle Basel, that discuss Chirulescu’s work in depth. Details from all prints and paintings on display in the exhibition appear in fullsize reproductions in the third section. In the fourth section, illustrations show the works in their entirety. The book works with the play of closeness and distance, reflecting the procedures of Chirulescu’s art as well as the question of how to adequately represent a past exhibition.
