Overview
What does it take to move from inspiration to action? For Mary Lang Sollinger, it meant dedicating herself to one of the most historic political campaigns of our time.
From Inspiration to Activism shares her personal journey following Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, highlighting ordinary people doing extraordinary things for love of country. From hosting a private fundraiser with Senator Obama in 2007 to organizing twelve fundraisers across Wisconsin, Mary's story is a testament to the power of grassroots involvement and civic engagement.
Through canvassing in Madison, Dubuque, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis, Mary discovered innovative ways to connect with voters and embody Obama's guiding creed: respect, empower, include (REI). She learned that REI is not just a campaign mantra. It is a way to build long term relationships, to do good, and to create sustainable groups that last beyond any single election cycle. REI resurrects relationships, makes you less judgmental, more kind and calm. It is the heart of this book. Not just the Obama campaign. Her experiences reveal the challenges and triumphs of political fundraising, volunteer coordination and community outreach.
Inside this book you will learn:
- Inspirational stories of ordinary citizens making extraordinary contributions
- How the REI creed can transform your long relationships and your activism
- How to engage and motivate volunteers for meaningful impact
- Practical strategies for grassroots campaigning
With an epilogue highlighting nine key lessons and tips for hosting your own political events, this guide is part memoir, part practical manual for anyone seeking to make a difference in their community or political landscape.

Author Bio
Mary offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at political canvassing and fundraising while following ordinary people doing extraordinary things for the love of our country. Mary's years of fundraising experience for community and non-profit organizations culminated and translated into an incredible effort to get out the vote for Senator Obama. While knocking on door after door in Madison, Dubuque, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis, Mary found unique ways to overcome obstacles when trying to connect with people on the other side of those doors. She embodied Obama's campaign mantra: respect, empower, include. As a result of her grassroots work and her fundraising successes, she was asked to serve on President Obama's National Finance Committee, both in 2008 and 2012. Mary has generously shared many inspirational and invaluable lessons learned throughout her years of experience. An epilogue is included with nine examples of successful fundraising events for those who want to have their own fundraising event for any organization.
