Author Bio

Catherine Clinton (PhD, Princeton) a pioneering historian of the American South and the Civil War, has taught at Harvard University in both the Department of History and the Department of Afro-American Studies; Union College, Brandeis University; and Brown University. She has been the Douglas Southall Freeman Visiting Chair of History at the University of Richmond, the Lewis Jones Visiting Chair of History at Wofford College, and is currently the Denman Endowed Professor in American History at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Professor Clinton is the author or editor of twenty-five books, including The Plantation Mistress: Woman’s World in the Old South; The Other Civil War: American Women in the Nineteenth Century; Southern Families at War: Loyalty and Conflict in the Civil War South; Civil War Stories; Life in Civil War America; the Scholastic Encyclopedia of the Civil War; Fanny Kemble’s Civil Wars; and Fanny Kemble’s Journals; along with several History Book Club selections including Divided Houses: Gender and the Civil War (with Nina Silber) and Mrs. Lincoln: A Life. She is a past president of the Southern Association for Women Historians.
