Grant and Halleck

John Y. Simon (PhD, Harvard) Professor of History at Southern Illinois University, was known for editing the papers of Ulysses S. Grant, creating a new standard for the organization of historical documents. He was awarded the Lincoln Prize for the thirty volumes of papers published. Professor Simon became a nationally known expert on Grant and the Civil War, as well as the dean of American documentary editors, a founder of the Association for Document Editing, and a spokesman for the craft before groups ranging from committees of the United States Congress to interested students. He published dozens of articles in such journals as the Journal of American History, Military Affairs, Agricultural History, and the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society. He contributed to numerous edited books, served as consultant to many historical societies and publishing projects and delivered scores of talks at professional conferences, Civil War Round Tables, and universities.
