Overview
Some truths are more poisoned than lies.
On the surface, Valerie Brooke appears to have life figured out. A young MBA graduate with a stable career and inherited wealth, she covertly struggles with a valium addiction and panic disorder. Orphaned as a baby, Valerie was raised by her aunt and uncle under the impression her family died in a car accident. Her world shatters when she learns that there was no car accident: Valerie is the lone survivor of an alleged murder-suicide committed by her mother.
Convinced her mother is innocent, Valerie sets out to investigate the twenty-year-old crime with the help of a journalist friend, but what comes to light in their investigation is more than Valerie bargained for. Amid scandal and dark family secrets, she watches as her world unravels—each revelation causing her addiction and anxiety to spin more out of control.
And the deeper she digs, the more Valerie begins to understand the awful truth: either she is the daughter of a killer, or the murderer roams free.
