Overview
"From Threshold to Threshold. The FrenchMoroccan artist Latifa Echakhch (b. El Khnansa, Morocco, 1974; lives and works in Martigny, Switzerland) often uses commonplace materials such as tea glasses, pebbles, sneakers, or carbon paper. Her art raises questions regarding nationality, the state, society, religion, history, and cultural heritage. Echakhch’s works, though formal in their conception, aim at a sensually vivid aesthetic experience. The artist frequently uses the symbolic as a vehicle of meaning, revealing, beneath the surface of its formal appearance, her engagement with more profound political, religious, and social issues. Latifa Echakhch’s works have been on display in solo exhibitions at MACBA, Barcelona (2010), Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2009), and Tate Modern, London (2008), among other venues. She is a participant in the 54th Biennale di Venezia (2011) and recipient of the 14th Mies van der Rohe Stipend of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld (2011). With a preface by Sylvia Martin, assistant director, Kunstmuseen Krefeld, and an essay by Rein Wolfs, artistic director, Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel."
