Overview
A wonderful aspect of God’s purpose in redemption is that the fellowship man enjoyed with Him, prior to sin coming into the world, can be righteously restored. The initiative for that restoration is all of God, through grace and the finished work of Christ, and the Bible record traces the ever-widening reach of God’s desire to dwell with His creature, man. Ultimately, divine purpose will be fulfilled when that which the Apostle John recorded comes to pass: “I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God” (Revelation 21.3). However, the truth of God’s dwelling with His redeemed people - the house of God - brings with it challenging and practical consequences for every believer. Many such challenges are presented in the Temple incidents found in Luke’s Gospel. The Temple in Luke’s Gospel: Lessons for the House of God investigates those occasions, and shows how application can be made to the character and conduct of Christians in local assembly fellowship, given that each assembly is to express “house of God” character (1 Timothy 3.15). The importance of this teaching is reflected in the fact that Luke’s Gospel begins and ends with a Temple scene. In between those ‘bookends’, each Temple incident uniquely provides distinctive lessons to be observed by believers today.
