Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75) was a prolific Danish author who wrote plays, poetry and novels as well as the beloved fairy tales for which he is best known. Born in Odense, he moved to Copenhagen at the age of 14 to look for work as an actor. After his voice broke, acting roles became limited and he focussed on writing. Andersen travelled widely, meeting the likes of Charles Dickens, and inspired by his encounters of his visits to countries such as Italy, he wrote both travelogues and stories that were all published. After an accident, he was also thought to have developed cancer of the liver and he eventually died at his home just outside Copenhagen.
Eleanor Vere Boyle (née Gordon) (1825-1916) was born in Kincardineshire in Scotland. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, she painted mostly in watercolors but never exhibited her work. For the main, she focused on book illustrations for children and also wrote and produced compilations of poetry for younger audiences, matching the poems with her illustrations.
