Overview
This collection of 10 stories were gathered in the late 19th and early 20th century by writer James Stephens, described by James Joyce as 'my rival, the latest Irish genius'. The lyricism and humor of these retellings are unequalled and provide wonderful insight into the culture and traditions of Ireland. Drawn from the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology, these tales include a host of remarkable characters, including Celtic warriors, fairy queens and mythical bands of warriors, the Fianna, led by Fionn mac Cumhaill.
Author Bio
James Stephens born in Dublin in 1880 and was known by the nickname 'Tiny Tim' due to his 4' 10" stature. His size, however, did not get in the way of his athleticism as he was a member of the 1901 Irish Shield winning gymnastic team. Shepherd graduated as a solicitor's clerk but his Irish Nationalism saw him find work as a registrar in the National Gallery of Ireland. He penned many retellings of Irish Folk and Fairy tales and further wrote original novels based on the traditions as well as poetry.
