About to turn nine years old, she is quickly learning that her "family" is full of secrets and lies, and what you have to say and do to avoid getting whipped with a belt. Unable to trust any adult in her life but Antoe, her mentally handicapped playmate, home is no longer the safe haven it once was. Girl hits the road to find the answers to questions surrounding her birth, her name, and why it is that Chuck always shouts about "be-it-calm" and drinks the brown stuff. On her journey, she finds some unexpected allies who help right her topsy-turvy world and give her hope for a brighter future.
